SA Tourism`s tourism statistics show that in 2001, about 160,000 tourists from the United States arrived in South Africa. After September 11, 2001, there is informal and anecdotal evidence that South Africa could become a preferred destination for U.S. travellers, given that there are reliable routes between the two countries in the event of an urgent need for U.S. visitors, as well as the fact that South Africa is considered a relatively safe destination for Americans travelling abroad. In addition, regional cooperation in the tourism sector within SADC, which bilaterally makes tourism promotion more attractive not only to South Africa, but also to the region as a whole. In this regard, there are enormous opportunities to be exploited and the concept of cross-border parks is just one example. SACU is the Second largest trading partner of the United States in Africa, after Nigeria, whose exports are almost exclusively petroleum products. In total, SACU is the 33rd largest trading partner of the United States. Imports from SACU amounted to $10.0 billion in 2007, an increase of 33% over 2005 and an increase of 169% over 19974. Major U.S. exports to the region include aircraft, automobiles, computers, medical devices, construction machinery and agricultural machinery.
The 2007 trade deficit with SACU was $4.4 billion. It describes the bilateral and multilateral trade agreements to which that country belongs, including with the United States. Includes websites and other resources that allow U.S. companies to get more information about how they can use these agreements. Despite lobbying by chicken farmers against South Africa`s inclusion in a renewed AGOA agreement, the U.S. Senate approved a bill to extend AGOA by 10 years, including South Africa. In exchange, South Africa agreed to allow 65,000 tonnes of poultry imports from the United States. South Africa`s exclusion from the new AGOA dispensation could have harmed the country`s trade. A related tariff is a rate that a country does not wish to exceed because of trade commitments in the WTO.
A tariff applied is a rate that is actually applied to goods. Annual development assistance to South Africa is currently worth about US$60 million and has been worth more than $650 million since 1994. U.S. programs are implemented through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The South African government, coordinated by the Treasury, and USAID have a high level of consultation on aligning USAID programs with South Africa`s national development priorities. USAID`s aid programs focus on promoting democracy and good governance in South Africa; Building the capacity of provincial and local educational institutions; Improved primary health care Technical assistance and scholarships to improve the country`s economic performance; Improving quality and access to housing, urban and green services in South Africa. Despite this progress, trade relations remain difficult. The broken relationship was put to the test when Rob Davies, then Minister of Trade and Industry, met with his American counterpart Michael Froman in Paris in 2015 to find a solution to a dispute that was a litmus test in the evolution of trade dynamics between the two countries. Negotiations for a free trade agreement between the United States and the five members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland) began on 3 June 2003.
In April 2006, negotiators suspended the Free Trade Agreement negotiations and launched a new work programme to strengthen trade and investment relations with a free trade agreement as a long-term goal.
